On our way from Tanzania to South Africa our flight took us through the beautiful Nairobi, Kenya airport. Only a week before the terminal had burned to the ground. However, despite the disaster, Kenya was miraculously able to keep the airport open for business.
The airport now consited of large white circus-type-tents set up on the tarmak with chairs thrown haphazardly below the shelter that appeared as if they had come from an old hotel. Security consisted of a random van that was parked outside the tent, which aparently had a security scanner inside. After walking to the other side of the van to receive your bag, you were briefly patted down and then corralled into the tent to wait.
Matt reported that everything at the airport was much more efficient than it had been a week before when he flew through on his way to Kilimanjaro and had ended up spending 17 extra hours waiting for a flight to get through Nairobi and to Kilimanjaro.
Typically after waiting in the tent for your flight a bus would show up to shuttle everyone to their plane. In our case, we were escorted a quarter mile or so down the tarmak to our plane by an airport employee. It truly was a once in a lifetime experience!
After a few random pasport checks we arrived at our plane (below)...
